Proper sizing depends on room size, layout, insulation, and climate. 

As a rule of thumb, plan for 24 BTU per square foot of cooling and heating capacity.

Example: 

A 375sq. ft. room needs roughly 9,000 BTU.

One indoor unit per major room or zone is typically recommended.
Open layouts may be served by one larger unit, while enclosed rooms benefit from dedicated units.

Adjust for factors like high ceilings, sun exposure, or poor insulation, which may require higher BTU output.
